Wow, has it really been 2 years since I posted?!? Insanity!

Some things have changed, and some have stayed static...but here I am, about a month away from finishing my junior year of college, and actually happier than I have been in a while. This part of the middle doesn't suck quite as bad as the first part of the middle. This is the part of the middle where you can see the light at the end of the tunnel (thank goodness!).

At the beginning of this semester, I realized that with about 6-9 hours of summer school, I could graduate a semester early. I was pretty gung-ho about that for a while, then realized that summer school costs money...that I currently do not possess. So I will be finishing out in 4 years, hopefully with a major in Human Environmental Science, and a minor in Journalism. It's hard to believe that this chapter will be closing soon. It's exciting, though!

Looking back at the last post about track shorts and The Northface...I realize that I have conformed even more, but I will say that it is for comfort's sake. Leggings - gifts from God to the female college student. So comfortable!!! I wear them all the time. Yoga pants - my new best friends (and I don't even *do* yoga). Oversized t-shirts - blessings in extra large. I'm still sporting my natural skin tone... I used to be good about going to tan a couple of times every week, but I had to quit my job, and my schedule is a little crazy, so I've been sporting the ultra-white look here lately. I'm trying to tell myself white is the new sun-kissed, but it's not working.
In the famous words of my friend Anne-Ashley, "If you can't tone it, tan it!"
I think I'll stand behind that and Miranda Lambert's statement that tan fat looks better than white fat. And on Twitter, I'd hashtag that #whitegirlprobs.
Ohh, yeahhh, Twitter. Funny story. I was never going to join Twitter, and then I was sitting in a dermatologist's office last fall, bored to death, and what do I do? Create a Twitter account. NEVER let a bored college student wait in a doctor's office for half an hour with free wifi. Needless Twitter accounts will be made.

What else do I have to catch up on..?
Boyfriends? Ha. The last few have been disasters, but I am dating a guy now who seems to have it together. He's smart (which is a relief), fun, and really easy-going. We'll see where it goes :)
Friends - I actually have them now (hallelujah!). Sara transferred, Raymond enrolled again, and we have an awesome little clique. We're loud and we laugh and we have fun. It's awesome!
Family - Hanna's a senior. Graduating in a couple of months. Scary thought. I'm old. It's official.

Til next time, (hopefully it won't be another 2 years)... H

College, Track Shorts, & iPhones

My freshman year of college, I was introduced to the world of University of Arkansas fashion.

I was so porud of myself because I had bought myself an awesome backpack from JC Penny that was on sale for like 3/4 of it's original price. I had bought some tennis shoes. I had a cute little glittery phone cover and everything... I was ready for school.

This is what I wore to my first day of school at the U of A. I will probably look back on it in 20 years and say, what was I thinking? I was too scared to wear flip flops because my classes were all back-to-back, so I wore my bar-laced chucks with no socks. At least one year later, I can say with all honesty, I still think it's a nice outfit.

And ya know what? I fit in perfectly. I looked about as normal as all the other girls on campus (except for the fact that I was actually sporting my natural skin tone). Some girls had dressed up, some had skanked out...I guess that's the good thing about going to school with 10,000 other girls - we're all going to dress differently.

But as time went on, I realized that there was, in fact, a dress code. It wasn't clearly stated anywhere, but very clearly implied by a majority of students in my classes.

You can see just about any brand of backpack on campus, but anybody who's anybody has The NorthFace.

If you want to wear short shorts, but you are too lazy or woke up too late to put an outfit together (or, if you want to just look like that was the case), you wear track shorts.
Track shorts are a requirement in sororities, and a prerequisite for everything else.

Want your feet to stay cool while you walk across campus? Don't wear flip flops. Wear those ugly, tree-hugging, hike-loving, hippie sandals that you can buy at the Pack Rat.

Computers are like backpacks - save yourself the trouble and get a Mac.

Cool kids don't take notes in a spiral notebook with a pen and a highlighter. They take down the highlights in Word while they wish their Facebook friends happy birthday and check out the pictures that their buddies from home uploaded at 2 in the morning.

Although it's hard to accept at first, you are allowed to text in most classes. Most kids keep their phones on their desk in plain sight.
Again, phones are like backpacks and computers. Get an iPhone (or something that resembles one, with a touch screen and an Otter Box).

Contrary to popular belief, cars are actually expensive, shiny boom boxes that you can sit in and steer.

Cool weather means only one thing -- The NorthFace.

So, in other words, if you want to look like the cool rich kid on a Student Refund budget, you're going to spend all your money, and probably lose your scholarship because your notes suck.

I survived my first year of college with a Protocol Gear backpack, an LG Xenon, a Dell laptop, notebooks full of hand-written notes, flip flops, a Columbia coat, and without track shorts or leggings, and ya know, I'm just as much a college student as any of the people out there. I may not have had Northface gear, but I was warm, and my backpack was my best friend. I may not have typed my notes on a Mac laptop, but I made the Dean's and Chancellor's List.

I consider this a great lesson. I may not have had what other people consider "the best," but I had what was best for me, and I was thankful for it. I love my car and my laptop, and that Xenon went through a lot with me.

This school year, I am resolving to not care so much about the status quo and "codes" of things on campus.
But, I have to admit that I have conformed. I now own 3 pairs of those blasted track shorts, and I just spent wayyyyyy too much money on an iPhone. (I think I can survive without the rest of the must-haves.)

The track shorts are incredibly comfortable. I now understand the obsession.
The iPhone is to check email without having to lug around my laptop all day or find and sign onto a U of A computer.

And even though I have conformed, I feel more comfortable with myself starting to school this year than either semester last year... Maybe it's cause I know what to expect now, maybe it's because I don't care as much, but one thing I do know is that I'm not going to change to make anyone happy except myself. :)

First Post...Ever.

My page looked slightly empty without a post, so I am posting. About what? I have no idea. Maybe the name of the page? That seems like a wonderful place to start.
Let's be super generic, shall we? This blog is so named because I am smack-dab in a bunch of "middles" in my life. (See "About Me" section for more information.)
I thought starting a blog would be a nice way to let off some steam about the frustrations and challenges I experience along the way.
